1963-64 SAN DIEGO VAQUEROS
2-A STATE BASKETBALL TEAM
The 1963-64 San Diego Vaquero boys basketball team holds the distinction of being the only team from the high school to reach the UIL 2-A State Basketball Tournament. The Vaqueros lost in the state semifinals to Lancaster High School who were a much taller opponent with a starting lineup of 6’6”, 6’5”, 6’5”, 6’4” and 6’1”. San Diego beat Hardin- Jefferson 51-45 to claim third place in the state and finish the historic season with a 30-3 record.
The Vaquero basketball team, led by Head Coach Modesto Garcia and Assistant Coach Anthony Cubriel, included: Carlos S. Treviño, Ruben Escobar, Luis A. Barrera, Tomas F. Molina, Manuel Esparza, Guadalupe Ibarra, Walter J. Reyna, Jesus O. Oliveira, Roel Perez, Homero Rosas and Raul de Leon.
The following is a brief recap of that historic season.The Vaqueros beat Falfurrias twice to start the season. They again triumphed over the Jerseys at the inaugural Hebbronville Basketball Tournament where the Vaqueros also defeated Laredo St. Jospeh in the second round. San Diego suffered their first loss of the season against Corpus Christi Solomon Coles.
The Vaqueros also competed at the Beeville Tournament, which featured 16-teams. They went on to beat Odem, an undefeated Robstown squad and New Braunfels. The Vaqueros suffered their second loss of the season against Seguin in the championship game by a score of 62-59. San Diego captured their first title at the Taft Tournament and headed into district play with an 18-2 record. The Vaqueros cruised through district play beating Benavides twice en route to a 26-2 record going into the post season. The playoffs saw San Diego achieve the same success by defeating Donna, Tuloso-Midway and Sweeney en route to the 2-A UIL State Tournament at historic Gregory Gym on the 40-acre campus of The University of Texas at Austin.
