Freddie Benavides is the first native Laredoan ever to play with a major league team.
He has always proved himself a versatile athlete. He had an early start in baseball when
he was an All-Star performer for the American Little League State finalist.
He went on to gain all-district recognition at Nixon High School in baseball and basketball.
He was also named All State in baseball. His heroics at Nixon as a shortstop and parttime
pitcher earned him a scholarship at Texas Christian University.
Benavides was a June. 1987 second round pick of the Cincinnati Reds. He spent his
first six seasons as a professional with the Reds playing 24 games with the team in 1991.
Prior to his promotion to the major leagues with the Reds, Benavides was a minor league
infielder in the Cincinnati organization with such teams as Cedar Rapids, Chattanooga and
Nashville. He played 24 games with the Reds in 1991 and batted .286 and as a back-up to
shortstop Barry Larkin in 1992 batted .231.
He was a second round expansion draft pick of the Colorado Rockies where Benavides
hit .286 in 74 games for the Rockies last season. He displayed his versatility as an infielder
with the Rockies by playing shortstop third. second, and first base. He was twice sidelined
by injuries. He had a short stay at AAA Colorado Springs in order to go through some rehabilitation
following an ankle injury.
The Colorado Rockies traded him to the Montreal Expos for the 1994 season.
