Robert Gonzalez, the All-American distance runner out of Falfurrias High School and Texas A&I University, currently a teacher in his native Falfurrias, was a state champion at Fal High, graduating in 1967. He was co-champion with, teammate Homer Martinez in the 1964 AAA mile run and won three straight mile titles after that. He was holder of the all-time state mile mark in 4:07.4, winning 37 of 43 races, setting meet records in 32 and winning 31 straight races. Gonzalez also won three state cross country championships. He was an all-Lone Star Conference performer for four years at A&l and an All-America in 1969. Gonzalez ran at the Laredo Border Olympics. Gonzalez still owns five A&l school records - mile, 880, 2 mile relay, sprint medley relay and distance medley relay. He was inducted into the A&I Hall of Fame in 1981.
