Mayers started his boxing career in 1952, working out at the Laredo Boys Club and participating in amateur events throughout south Texas. One of the highlights of his early career was winning the welterweight crown in a Corpus Christi Gloves tournament. One of his teammates, Lefty Barrera, was a member of the U.S. boxing team in the 1960 Olympic Games at Tome. After Mayers graduated from Texas A&I University in 1960, he moved to Nashville. But he continued boxing, winning regional Golden Gloves titles in 1962 and 1963 and advancing to the national quarterfinals once. He had a 172-9 record with 86 knockouts in amateur competition, then won six more bouts as a professional. Mayers also served as a boxing coach and official. He coached a Laredo team to the south Texas Golden Gloves title in 1958. One of his pupils, Dickie Marquez, once advanced to the national Golden Gloves finals.
