JESUS (CHUY) GUERRA
BASKETBALL
High School All-American
Roma, TX High School - 1972
Very few basketball players can match Guerra's credentials. The 5-11 guard started four years at Pan American after a brilliant schoolboy career at Roma under coach Eleuterio (Leo) Garza. Guerra played on four Roma teams that sported a glossy 129-20 won-loss mark from 1968-72. The 1972 team advanced to the state tournament. Guerra is Roma's all-time leading scorer, averaging better than 24 points per game. He led the team in scoring since his sophomore year. Guerra has the distinction of being a three-time Texas Sportswriters Assn. All-State first team pick. He was named to the Sunkist and the Scouting Systems of America All-American teams. At Pan Am, Guerra played one season under coach Sam Williams and three years for the colorful Abe Lemons. Guerra was the point guard four years on teams that were 60-39 during that span. Under Lemons, Guerra guided teams to 22-2 and 20-5 records. The year after Guerra graduated Lemons left Pan Am to become the head basketball coach at Texas. Guerra averaged 13 points per game during his sophomore, junior and senior years and led the team in assists with averaging 7, 8 and 9 per game over the three seasons. As a junior, Guerra's Pan Am team was ranked in the top 20 in the nation. Two of Guerra's teammates in 1974 were Bruce King, the second leading scorer in the nation with a 31-point average, and Carlos (Tree) McCullough, the second leading rebounder in the nation with a 16 average. In 1976, Guerra played on the same team the with nation's top scorer, Marshall Rogers, who averaged 36 points per game. As a senior, Guerra was named to the all-tourney team at the Senior Bowl in Alabama. Guerra scored over 1,000 points and recorded over 650 assists during his career with the Broncs. He ranks 10th on the all-time Pan Am career scoring list.
