Texas Catholic Interscholastic League - 1955
When most kids are in the fifth grade, they talk about becomming firemen or policemen or
doctors, and when they grow up most wind up doing something entirely different. When Xavier
Perez was in the fifth grade at St. Augustine Parochial School, he wanted to be a basketball star.
Success wasn't easy for the 5' 7" eager but with hard-work and determination, his dream
came true. He attributes his success to his first Coach Richard Morales Sr .. Basketball has
always been a big part of Perez's life. With an early start in elementary school, he was
accomplished enough to play on the St. Augustine Varsity. When he was in the eighth grade
and before the Texas Catholic Interscholastic League had rules banning such things.
When "Kid" was a senior in 1955, his team won District and was a finalist in the State Tourney.
Perez was picked All-District three years and selected to the All-State Team in his senior year.
He averaged 25 points a game that season. He represented Nuevo Laredo in the Tamaulipas
State Tourney in 1958 and was selected to try-out for the Pan American Games representing
Mexico but declined the offer and joined the U. S. Army. He played basketball and was picked
to the All -Armed Services European AII·Star team in 1960. He was also invited to the U. S
Olympic team try-outs but received his discharge before he could participate in them.
In 1972, Perez coached The Moody High School Trojans of Corpus Christi to the District
and Bi-District Basketball Championships. He and his wife Ruth and two children live in Corpus
Christi.
