Albert born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico graduated from Thomas Jefferson
High School in El Paso and is considered as the best prep cage player to come out of that
area. He enrolled at the University of Texas on a basketball scholarship and started for
the Longhorns for four years being named All -Southwest Conference from 1958 to 1961 .
In 1957, Sports Illustrated Magazine picked him as a future All-American choice along
with Jerry West, Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas. In 1960, he was a member of the
Mexican National Team in the Pan American Games in Chicago. He also represented
Mexico in the 1960 Olympics in Rome and the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. Both years,
he was picked to the All-World Basketball Team. The Dallas Morning News selected him
as All-American in 1961. The Los Angeles Lakers made him their first draft choice in
1961. Presently Almanza is a New York Life Insurance Company~active in the
optimist, Pan American, Big Brothers and Big Sisters Austin organizations.
He and his wife Helen and two children reside in Austin .
