JOHN HERNANDEZ
Tennis
NCAA Doubles Finalist Southwest Conference
Singles and Doubles Champion
Junior Davis Cup Member
University of Texas - 1955
With his first tennis racket cut out of the side of an apple box, John discovered a love of tennis on the courts of San Antonio's City Parks. He fondly recalls that he was helped and encouraged along the way by Mrs. Augusta Boyle. She was very interested in under-priviledged children. Mrs. Boyle didn't realize that she was helping a future champion. In 1951, Hernandez was Singles State Champ while attending Jefferson High. He was ranked No. 1 in Texas and was selected for the U. W. Junior Davis Cup Team. He enrolled in the University of Texas and became Southwest Conference Singles and Doubles Champion in 1953-54. In 1955, he was SWC Doubles Champion along with Sammy Grimalua . . . and both reached the NCAA finals before losing to University of Southern California 's Pancho Contreras and Joaquin Reyes for the title. That same year, Contreras and Reyes represented Mexico in Davis Cup Zone Play. Hernandez is now a Tennis Pro at San Antonio 's Northeast Tennis Center. He holds free summer Tennis Clinics for San Antonio's under-priviledged youths.
