Herrera, a native of Nuevo Laredo, began his professional career in the Mexican League in 1945. He played for the Nuevo Laredo "La Junta" team and the Veracruz Azules. In 1947, Herrera moved to the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League and stayed there for seven seasons, except for a brief stint with the St. Louis Browns in 1951. Herrera won 15 games in 1950, when San Antonio took the Texas League championship and claimed the "Dixie Series" against Nashville. He returned to his hometown in 1955 and helped Nuevo Laredo take the Mexican League Championship.
